Reinventing Table Tennis

A customised table tennis table created for Exhibition Match, curated by Will Nash and showcased outside of Hayward Gallery.

My reinvention of the game was an exploration on absurdity. I removed the net to substitute it for random objects, doll parts, limbs, some mechanical items and old rackets. I created a small landscape of playful and absurd objects without a functional purpose other than obstructing the ball without rational order.

As visitors interacted with the piece the resulting “reinvented” game was actually terribly frustrating, an experiment that showed how playfulness without a clear purpose can easily fall into chaos. As a response to the frustration, a girl decided to stop using the conventional racket and instead grabbed one of the arms from the table. Maybe the true potential of playfulness comes when one is prepared to break boundaries, when one feels truly free.
