Hinges presents an enigmatic tale of life and death: an exploration of the infinite and finite, holding time at bay, but also gently letting it go…
These striking hybrid compositions seem to both invite and defy decay through combining dismembered parts of discarded items including furniture, objects that belonged to the now deceased, broken taxidermy and other found objects.
Cristina invites the viewer to engage with sub-worlds contained in a range of hinged receptacles – mostly boxes and cases – some of which are open, some half-open and others purposely left closed. In this work there is a sense of worlds-within-worlds, fluidity and the movement between states life and death, where the hinge is the axis of possibility and control.
